Chairmans Remarks : Details of the Tribunal’s workload over the past 12 months are set out in this report. The Tribunal has become very busy during the last year due to a significant increase in business. Nearly all Tribunal cases are now being dealt with under the Scottish Solicitors’ Discipline Tribunal Procedure Rules 2008. The Tribunal has seen even more cases involving the Council on Mortgage Lenders’ Handbook and has also been dealing with quite a number of Appeals under section 42ZA by lay complainers against decisions of the Law Society not to make a finding of unsatisfactory professional conduct.
The Tribunal Findings continue to be put on the website which is fully searchable and can be accessed at www.ssdt.org.uk The Tribunal hearings are by default held in public, either at George House, 126 George Street, Edinburgh or the Scotsman Hotel, Edinburgh. Forthcoming Tribunal hearings are detailed on the diary part of the website. The Tribunal email address has changed to email@example.com
This report highlights the main points from the Decisions during the previous year and also provides workload statistics and some costing information.
Kirsteen Keyden, an extremely able solicitor member and Vice Chair of the Tribunal, regrettably stood down from the Tribunal at the Annual Meeting on 6 June 2013. Joseph Hughes, another valuable member of the Tribunal, did not seek reappointment when his term of office expired on 5 September 2013. Michael Hastie, a lay member of the Tribunal, resigned from the Tribunal on 24 October 2013. I would like to thank them all for their service to the Tribunal over the last few years.
The smooth running of the Tribunal is only possible with the assistance I receive from my Vice Chairmen, the Tribunal members, the Tribunal Clerk, the Depute Clerks and the Tribunal secretaries and I would like to thank them all for their help and support during the year.
